After doing LL.B and MA Economics he became an IAS Officer of 1950 batch. His academic interest took him to National Academy of Administration Mr Chaturvedi was the Chief Commissioner of Union Territory of Chandigarh and Chief Secretary of Delhi He was the Director of IIPA and made that institution as an international centre of Training. He is still the Chairman. He served as Secretary to the Government of India and was made Comptroller and Auditor General in 1984. He was a Member of Rajya Sabha for 10 years before he assumed the Office of the Governor of Karnataka in 2002. He was selected for the Capital Foundation Award in the 2005 He received Doctorate from Lal Bahadur Shastri Sanskrit Vidya Peeth and another one from the Punjab University Chandigarh. Today in recognition of his merit as a distinguished public servant The Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha presents him Capital Foundation National Award. [2005][/box]
